Preparing for Spring Duluth-style from the Outside-In: Part One

With such extreme weather in Duluth, spring is a highly anticipated event. As the temps rise, it’s not usual to smell hamburgers on the grill and see people sun bathing in their yards - even if there’s still patches of snow on the ground! As I write this, snow is swiftly falling and blanketing our freshly exposed lawns. So, here we go with another round, but it WILL be melting quickly so we can get on to this business of spring. Here’s some ways Duluthians celebrate spring, and prepare for a busy, summer outside.

Buy a Bike, or get yours tuned up! The 8th Annual Continental Ski & Bike Swap is THIS WEEKEND! This is a don’t-miss community event for buying a used bike! Sat 10-5, Sun 11-3 at Continental Ski & Bike 1305 East 1st St. Check out the Facebook event here. Continental Ski and Bike and Ski Hut both do tuneups and repairs on bikes.

Rake the yard! The snow melts, and in its wake leaves matted down, ugly dead grass. The quicker it’s raked away, the sooner the new green can grown in. WLSSD is a great place to go to drop off yard waste (leaves, yard and grass clippings are free)!

Prepare for a Garden: If you are planning to garden there’s a couple steps you can take now.

If your plan is to start seedlings under growing lights or in window light, buy the seeds and organize them by the date of when you need to start them. Different vegetables and flowers have varying germination periods and need different amounts of time to grow. It may be a little late for tomatoes, and some squashes to start from seed if you live close to the lake, so check the back of the seed packets for specific instructions, then plant accordingly for harvesting in July, August and Early September.

If you plan on buying your flowers and vegetables, there are many local greenhouses with high quality options. Check the Duluth News Tribune THIS SATURDAY for their greenhouse guide.

Prepare your garden plot by adding nutrient-rich compost to it. If you haven’t composted this year, or that's not your thing, WLSSD is a great place to buy affordable, high quality compost. Check out the details on how to compost here. Also, WLSSD puts on an annual sale for compost bins and rain barrels if you want to start that in the future. The sale is on May 17th. Click here for more information.

Check back on the blog for more ways to prepare for spring, and hopefully next time you're here, there won’t be ANY snow on the ground!
